How to play Hashi

Hashi (Hashiwokakero, “build bridges”) is a logic puzzle of islands and bridges. Each number is an island that must end up with exactly that many bridges attached. Bridges run straight across or down, at most two between any pair of islands, and they cannot cross. When everything fits, the whole web of islands has to be connected as one.

The rules

  1. Each island must get exactly as many bridges as its number.
  2. Bridges run horizontally or vertically and cannot cross.
  3. There can be up to two bridges between a pair of islands.
  4. Drag between two islands to build a bridge — drag again for a double one. In the end all islands must connect.
Example board

Getting started: An island needing almost all its possible bridges (like a 3 in a corner with two neighbours) often has only one option — start there.

2Taken together, the neighbouring islands' options force a bridge down.

Common questions

Can two bridges run between the same islands?

Yes, up to two. A double bridge counts as two of the island’s bridges. Drag between the islands once for a single bridge, again for a double, and a third time to remove it.

Can I play right in the browser?

Yes. Pick a Hashi puzzle and solve it on screen — press “Check” to see if you are on track, and “Hint” if you get stuck. You can also print it.

Can I link to a specific puzzle?

Of course. Every puzzle has a number, and you can link straight to it: puzzles.flogvit.com/eng/hashi?nr=100. Replace 100 with the puzzle number — handy for challenging a friend with the very same puzzle.

Can I print the puzzles?

Yes. Each type has a print sheet for one or four puzzles with the answers on a separate page.

Are the puzzles free to use?

Yes, this is a free service. If you want to publish the puzzles elsewhere you must arrange it first — see copyright.
